Parish church of Árpás-Mórichida in 360°

The church of the former Premonstratensian abbey dates from the first half of the 13th century. Originally built in a Romanesque and Gothic style it was remodelled around 1750 to suit Baroque taste.

In all likelihood the provostry church already stood here before 1251. Two towers guard its west facade and the cascaded porch framed by smooth columns just out of the wall surface. The south and north facades are articulated by plain buttresses and arched windows. Narrow medieval windows break the wall of the rectangular sanctuary.

1. What to see

The sanctuary is the most precious section of the interior. It is typically Gothic with its arched ribs meeting in the capstone which forms a hand extended in blessing, and its triumphal arch separating the sanctuary from the nave.

Below the stone ribs of the ceiling, however, Baroque took a strong held. The altar is richly decorated and framed by four beautifully carved statues next to the Corinthian columns and another two above the crest ledge. Above them the Mary monogram can be seen in a wreath of clouds. The original altarpiece painted by an unknown master depicted the Madonna protecting the map of Hungary with her robe.

The side altars, the superbly carved pulpit and the baptistry with its octagonal foot are all 18th-century Baroque works.
