El Sauzal: Casa del Vino in 360°
La Casa del Vino La Baranda is a worthy representative of well conserved historic country estates in Tenerife, Spain. The style of the house is typical of Canary Island buildings of the 17th century, hence including building aspects and details by master craftsmen from Portugal, Castile and Extremadura. The La Baranda estate, including the manor house, was bought by the El Sauzal Town Council in 1989 and got it turned into a Wine Museum.
1. What to see
The most beautiful part of the house si the former chapel with its outstandingly colourful Mudejar roof that has been maintained without any restoration work.
The house also has its own Exhibition Hall where art (painting, sculpture and photography) exhibitions are displayed periodically.
Wine Museum offers an insight into the history of the wines of Tenerife and their importance, together with a view of the current situation of the island wine growing industry.
Honey Museum was created to meet the growing demand for information about the honeys of Tenerife. It acts as a valuable instrument for providing continuity to the task of promoting and enhancing the value of the honeys of Tenerife carried out by the Island Cabildo (Council). The entire hall is intended as a small tribute to both honeys, full of amazing characteristics and history, with a long tradition and a promising future, and to the island’s beekeepers who have made them possible with their know-how and devotion.
Local restaurant offers typical Canary Island dishes, carefully made with the traditional and basic ingredients of the settlers of the islands, resulting in a culinary delight. From fish (there is an enormous wealth of fish species in the Canary Islands) to the meat, without forgetting the tasty “mojos” (Canary Island sauces), potatoes, cheese to the fine Canary Island dessert pastries. It specialises exclusively in wines from Tenerife. Las Casa del Vino has won several gastronomy prizes for the best Canary island cuisine, including what is considered the most important one in the Canary Island, the one awarded by the “Diario de Avisos” newspaper, won in 1996.
Visitors can taste a wide range of local wines in the former outhouses and wine cellar. The list of wines available for tasting is changed every two weeks. Visitors can choose from a total of 12 wines ( whites, reds and rosés) accompanied by exquisite locally produced cheeses and nuts.
