Lake Bratan and Ulun Danu temple in 360°
Pura Ulun Danu Bratan, or Pura Bratan, is one of the two major water temples in Bali (the other one is Pura Ulun Danu Batur). Water temples serve the entire region in the outflow area; downstream there are many smaller water temples that are specific to each irrigation association. Pura Bratan was built by the King of Mengwi in 1633 on the west side of Lake Bratan, on a small island near the village of Candi Kuning.
1. What to see
The Hindu temple contains a three-tiered meru dedicated to Dewi Danu, goddess of the sea and of lakes. He is believed to makes the water flow into the rivers and irrigation systems. Another meru with eleven tiers is dedicated to Dewa Pucak Manu.
The adjoining Buddhist stupa with figures of Buddha meditating in the lotus position in niches on the square base is an unusual feature of this temple. It is to be found to the left of the entrance to the first courtyard. The stupa reflects the adoption of Buddhist beliefs by Balinese Hindus.
2. When to see
Pura Ulun Danu Bratan is open daily 7am-5pm except on Nyepi day. Alike in all Hindu temples in Bali, a compulsory sarong can be hired at the entrance to enter the temple.
3. Location
4. How to get there
Most tourists visit Bali on a package tour that includes an option to select from a range of excursions. If travelling on your own, probably the easiest way is to rent a car with a driver for an entire day. It is not recommended to drive on your own in Indonesia due to the general negligance of driving rules. Singposts are written with Latin alphabet, but it might be difficult to find remote places on your own.
5. Where to stay
There are plenty of hotels to stay in Bali, the best beaches can be found at Kuta, Sanur and Nusa Dusa. If you prefer sightseeing, Sanur area is highly recommended since it has the best location to avoid the traffic jams of Denpasar.
