Gunung Kawi - Royal Tombs in 360°
The name of this place literally means “Mountain of Ancient Poetry.” (Gunung = mountain, Kawi = ancient poetry). From the parking lot to the remains, you climb down about 300 steps stairs, pass rice terraces and a stream, and finally arrive at the remains on the bottom of the valley. Various inscriptions indicate that Anak Wungsu, at one time ruler of much of Bali, was venerated here together with his four wives and four concubines. They committed suttee, the Indian custom of a widow burning herself, either on the funeral pyre of her dead husband or in some other fashion, soon after his death. This suggests that the complex was established in the 11th century, either in Anak's lifetime or soon after
1. What to see
Following the narrow path visitors first encounter a group of four monuments. Perhaps these monuments mark the tombs of the four concubines of Anak Wungsu, at one time ruler of much of Bali. The group of five monuments lies opposite the four monuments, at the other side of the stream. The highest out of the five monuments may possibly be that of Anak Wungsu. To the right of the five monuments is a group of monks' cells known as the First Monastery.
2. When to see
Gunung Kawi is open daily 7am-6pm except for Nyepi day. Alike in all Hindu temples in Bali, a compulsory sarong can be hired at the entrance to enter the temple.
4. How to get there
Most tourists visit Bali on a package tour that includes an option to select from a range of excursions. If travelling on your own, probably the easiest way is to rent a car with a driver for an entire day. It is not recommended to drive on your own in Indonesia due to the general negligance of driving rules. Singposts are written with Latin alphabet, but it might be difficult to find remote places on your own.
5. Where to stay
There are plenty of hotels to stay in Bali, the best beaches can be found at Kuta, Sanur and Nusa Dusa. If you prefer sightseeing, Sanur area is highly recommended since it has the best location to avoid the traffic jams of Denpasar.
