It is a medieval fortress built upon a hill within the Upper town of Bergamo.
Most visitors climb here to enjoy the sweeping panoramic view of Bergamo including the views of Santa Maria Maggiore, the Cathedral, Piazza Vecchia and San Agostino monastery.
1. What to see
Construction works of the fortress were started in 1331 by John of Bohemia, the Count of Luxembourg and King of Bohemia (about 1310-1346). It has always been a strategic building during the Visconti, Venetian, French and Austrian rule. Artillery was kept in the fortress during the Venetians and the Austrians used it as barracks and a prison. Patriots were imprisoned here during the Risorgimento, the unification of Italy. Today it houses a collection of Museo Storico della Città, focusing on the events of the Risorgimento. Military vehicles are on display in the park.
